This I think depends not only on pigments' type but on open area of environment (normally no shadow), mainly thin covers of cells with perfect transparenсy for sunrays, minimum energy losses for transportation of nutrients. The rate of volume and surface esp for unicellular is perfect! As well high amount of primary production appears in dissolved state of organic acids etc.... Some other reasons need much more volume to be explained like passing over protists, and intestine both invertebrates and vertebrates and stay alive (a lot of) with next acceleration of grow efficiency. As well small alga frequently participated in biocenotic relations (eg, zoochlorella) and host species (like turbellaria) are trying to find the best position for alga' activity. I hope even this explanation is enough for better understanding.
Thanks for your detailed response. Yes, precisely rate of volume and available surface will convert more. It is worth to pursue, maybe I will convene a skype call, if required.
Is it possible or does algal associated bacteria contribute? Through up-taking oxygen and making more bioavailable co2 in aquatic ecosystem?
Interesting to make more interaction, of-course in your free time,
The answer seems obvious. Terrestrial plants (ex. trees) have X area of photosynthetic surface area per unit Mass (or Volume) as do all photosynthetic organisms, but it is the ratio of area to Mass that is important. Trees also have branches, bark, roots and some fruits, none of which contribute to photosynthesis but do contribute to the biomass that consumes energy thus reducing aggregate photosynthetic efficiency.
Algae are tiny. As a result of their size as well as the fact that algae have no roots, branches, bark or fruits to consume the energy manufactured by the chloroplasts means that the PSA/unit Mass or the area/unit Volume while much smaller. However even though smaller, the values for the numerator and denominator of the PSA/M of algae have a lower differential and it is that differential that mathematically indicates photosynthetic efficiency .
Nature makes up for the size difference between a tree and an individual alga, by making a lot of alga, so they can form a society we call an algae culture. ---- The delta between the variables Photosynthetic Surface Area/Mass is the easiest way I know to get where you want to go.
