The domestication process of jujube from wild sour jujube is a fascinating topic. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Jiaxian Traditional Chinese Date Gardens in China's Jinshaan Canyon is recognized as the place with the longest history of jujube cultivation.
The community presents the whole domestication process of jujube from wild sour jujube, via half-cultivated sour jujube, cultivated sour jujube to cultivated jujube ¹.
While the FAO report provides a high-level overview of the domestication process, a more detailed study on the genetics of domestication of jujube was conducted by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
They sequenced the Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), an economically important fruit tree crop in China, as well as 31 cultivated and wild varieties. Their study revealed that the domestication of jujube involved a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors.
