I am working on Effect of parents personality patterns on adolescents, I have collected data from parents and adolescents by using different scales on both population. Now I have to create SPSS sheet for data analysis. Kindly guide me about how to create single SPSS sheet for both population as the scales used for both populations are different??
In most research with people, each row is a participant and each column is a bit of data (e.g., response to item). What might be confusing in your study is your unit-of-analysis is not a person, but a family. Along one row is all your values for the family: adolescent, parent 1, & parent 2. Even if you used the same measures for multiple participants, it's still the same row for a family. Now you can run analyses like correlating parent and child personality or a repeated-measure ANOVA where parent/child is a within-subject variable. Alternatively, for a multiple regression, you might have a row for each person and dummy-code family. But that sounds unwieldy since you have different scales for each family member. I think you have to merge two different datasets for analysis. For this, you have to determine the common identifier(s) in both files (in your case parent and adolescent).Then sort both data files by the common identifier variable. Finally, using the right SPSS commands, you have to merge two data files. I am afraid, I don't know the SPSS command or syntax for data merging.
