We are describing a new species of mammal in a paper with some 30 authors. Is the first author automatically the species authority or are all authors, or should t the authors decide who came up with the name and should thus be designated authority? How does that work according to the Code? I can see the authority definition as "the person who first publishes a scientific name in a way that satisfies the criteria of availability", but this doesn't deal with multiple authors. What is the consensus or what are the rules on this?
Dear Erik; If you do not specify within the paper who describes the species, then it will be automatically authored by all the authors of the paper, in the same order. If you do not want all authors of the paper to be indicated as authors of the new species, or not in the same authorship order, then you should specify in the paper, when you introduce the new species name, who are the authors and in which order. See the Code online (http://iczn.org/iczn/index.jsp), article 50.

Camelomorpha longicervix Kirejtshuk, Azar & Telnov, in Kirejtshuk & Azar, 2008
where
Kirejtshuk, Azar anbd Telnov are authors of the taxon
and
Kirejtshuk and Azar are authors of the publication.
