Who is the ideal learner? Is it the learner who works hard and memorizes everything he is responsible for in the exam and gets high grades, or the one who can't get high grades in the exam because he doesn't have the ability to memorize, but has creative, critical and analytical thinking competence?
People learn in different ways and have varying strengths and weaknesses. Some people may excel at memorization and perform well on exams, while others may struggle with this but have strong critical thinking and analytical skills. It's important for educators to recognize and appreciate the diversity of learning styles and abilities among their students, and to create learning environments that support all learners. This means providing a variety of activities and assessments that allow students to demonstrate their understanding and skills in different ways, rather than relying solely on exams or memorization
I would agree with Ajit Singh here. Students assimilate information differently and at different pace. There has to be a diverse approach to the process of assessing learners' retention and recall abilities.
In my opinion, I would say an ideal student would be one that occasionally (or constantly) exhibit the ability to recall (for examination purposes) or posses strong critical thinking and analytical skills when necessary. This is where formative assessment is important because the lecturer would know the level of the student's critical thinking and analytical skills even if they falter during the summative assessment.
Assessment in this instance should be varied, robust and dynamic.
Thanks for your precious information and interest in my question Professor Goldschmied. You are right. I should have made an extra background information about the evaluation process . Having high grades in the exam might not be in contradiction with creativity but here in Turkey we do not refer to all language skills in secondary school concept but just use pen and paper exam comprising reading - comprehension text, fill in the blanks questions for checking vocabulary knowedge and some matching, unscramble words activities and transformation drills.
