Who should be the first author in published papers extracted from a master or Ph.D. Thesis. Should be the supervisor of the thesis or should be the student who had done the academic thesis?
The name of the post gradute studend goes first ,he is the only one who have his scope and already he took the responsibility either in discusion or in applicatin after that .The supervisor play the role of how to guide and give advise .
Who is the first author in papers extracted from an academic thesis?
Generally should be the student who had graduated. Reason being the student had contributed most of the efforts, s/he knows in & out of the researched thesis & had passed the viva exam. Due credits should go to the student. Moreover, doing this can motivate the student for further research, article writing & publication etc. The supervisor can be the 2nd author in view of his / her supporting role to guide the student. However, there are occasions (not many) whereby the supervisors wanted their names to be the first author after discussion / negotiation with the student.
I believe the student should be the first author in papers extracted from an academic thesis. The guidance of supervisor is also very essential in this concern.
In agreement with the majority of the colleagues, I consider that the student should be the first author in papers extracted from his/her academic thesis. Sometimes, the position of the second author may be negotiable, taking into account the active involvement of each co-author in the specific manuscript for submission. In any case, the appearance of the name of supervisor (as author) in the manuscript is undoubted with only one exception; their will to refuse their involvement with regard to the manuscript.
It is normally the first name in the list of authors of the published article, however a mark of identification such as (*) can be provided and the corresponding author can be notified, when in case the first name in the list is other than the main contributor.
As many colleagues pointed out, student should be the first author for papers that extracted from her/his thesis. This is not contradicting with the so-called academic ethics as some argues. Student efforts should be appreciated in comparison with supervisors participation or it will be unfair otherwise.
Prof. Auda has right writing that 'some supervisors underestimate their student's efforts and order them to have their names placed as the first authors.' A reason for this, may be the application of these supervisors for a better position in their institutions, a fact which possibly means, among others, a number of required publications with their names appearing first.
I thought I had put my comment here but could not see it. However, articles extracted from a PhD thesis, when published, should have the name of students as first authors and names of advisers as second authors. It is because the thesis is the work of the student in guidance of the adviser and also the thesis is a work about the student, to introduce to the world of publication and encourage him/her and become active participant in it. Therefore, it is reasonable to make the name of students as first authors.
The bad thing is when the adviser some how has favoritism and relation between the student and the adviser gets dysfunctional and the adviser starts to hid works of a particular student and promoting other students for less reasons of doing that.
Unfortunately, many times, favoritism, this human weakness, is the driving force which promotes some students against others, as pointed out insightfully by Prof. Lakew. And not only students...
The student should be the first author because the entire work is HIS/HERS. Supervisors in this particular case should be training their students on how to write and an academic paper and process it through the different stages of publication.
Thank you for the link that contains some of the illusions we live in academics. Not only lying in that fashion but some even select whom to promote and whom to berry alive among their own graduate students. I know a person who referenced the works of one of his students in several papers he published with students or with others but never referenced works of another student at all in any of those works he supervised or published with others. The paradox of living in a presumed free and intellectual world of academics and the rampant abuses and corrupt practices of reality in it.
Dear Rihab Mohamed Abdelrahman, I'm of the opinion that your question is highly relevant and is a one of the burning issues in academic research. I believe it as the issue of making a choice between the VALUES and the PRACTICE.
Agreeing with the majority of the contributing colleagues here on this portal, I also endorse putting the student's name before the supervisor in publishing the paper extracted from the student's Masters', MPhil or Ph.D. Thesis. It's the matter of VALUE. Yet, practices may also demand the other way round. Given the supervisor's involvement not only in preparing the thesis but also in rewriting the journal paper/article and even in calculating the results afresh along with making new tests not performed in the original thesis, then it may be justifiable for the supervisor to place his name before his student's. Whose name should come first also is a negotiable decision, as Aristidis Matsoukis has rightly mentioned above. Hence, I believe in making it a decision based on the blend of both value and practice (dogmatism and pragmatism) instead of sticking to some 'rule of thumb'. All the best. Cheers !
Student's name should be written first ,because its his/him work and he/she will discuss it in a clear way.Its protocol in usual writing even in Thesis or Phd
Dear Idris made a good point. In addition, there is the possibility, in which, the holder of the Ph.D. thesis can be both the first author and the corresponding author, as in the attached publication (derived from the aforementioned Ph.D thesis).

The first author should be the research scholar, who has worked on the thesis for the award of doctoral degree. The second author should be research supervisor (Guide) of the research scholar.
In my opinion, it depends on who contribute more towards the published papers. The word "extraction" does not mean taking every thing from the thesis. The extraction can be meant as taking 100% (reformatting into publishable one) or taking some parts of the thesis and modify them into more up-to-date information or it can be extracting the the thesis and then combine it with several theses or other research reports to have more interesting publishable papers. So, in my opinion, whose person's name should come first, it depends on contributions (who contribute more towards the paper). I am of the opinion that in most cases the student's name should be at first, but if the supervisor contribute more towards the paper, s/he deserves to have his/her name as the first author. Rule of thumb is very simple, who contribute more reserve to be named as first author and least contributor should be put at last. Published paper and research are two different activities.
Research is an evolution, at times there would be a researcher who is solely responsible for a creation or invention, Academic research however is more innovative and predominantly a group activity in many research and academic organization. Invariably the head of the project is notified as the lead in all communications as well as in publications. In all perspective, the original contributor can never be under cover for long, some time or other their potential will get exhibited and would be recognized by peers and others.
Very respectable answers from dear colleagues to this important question . I think we share the same opinion about the student or researcher right to be the first author, but I agree totally with the interesting answer of Krishnan Umachandran.
