Obviously, an artist is someone who creates art, just a baker is someone who makes bread. These are simply trades and professions; that is, means by which different people make their livings. Unlike baking however, the difficulty lies in defining "art." Art is pretty much whatever anybody says it is, and an artist is similarly anybody who says he is one. This leaves any definition of "artist" and "art" so vague as to be meaningless. In your opinion, who is an Artist?

Aristotle seems to be saying that Art is a principle of bringing about useful or beautiful objects. He distinguished it from science and practical wisdom.
I like the Kantian idea that Art is a skill or an activity that produces a schema and not primarily an object. So, it’s a skill that is different from science, as when a poet brings a poem into existence.
I find this a really interesting question.
Someone who was an artist, tried to understand what art is. He watched his granddaughter as she learned to draw. Then he began to try to understand how he himself created "art". Later in life he tried to understand how he chose colours to to create works of art. All through this, he wrote a program that continues to create new works, even 4 years after the artist's death.

interesting links Jacob Simons about Aaron and Harold Cohen (like a kind of Augmented Art / Artist). They are more and more artists who work with Artificial Intelligence tools like styleGAN.
Definitions of Art and Artist change over time and are not the same in all part of the world.
But, the core properties are :
- production of tangible (objects) or intangible (ritual, performance etc.) artifacts

- with invention of Museum, Art became an "autonomous field" with artists who develop their own original projects and works (this conception of Museum influenced other countries where there were mainly artisans and not yet artist like in modern or contemporary Art)
- Art is specific and autonomous but even if artist use several other tools, technical skills or knowledges what they do as artist is art and they don't "become automatically" or claim to be a photographer (a a technical master of this medium) or scientist only because they use photography or scientific methods
So, an artist is an autonomous person or agent (the more Artificial entities will be autonomous and will act with agency and the more they will use as artist) who produces things based on his own Aesthetics practice and rules without other goal than doing them even if they could be made to be sale or produce following an artistic public or private commission.

His practice spans a broad range of media including sculpture, photography, neon, video, drawing, printmaking, and performance. I'm not sure that "real artist" or "best artist" are applicable to try to define the term Artist in Fine Arts. But Bruce Nauman is a kind of Legend in Conceptual and Contemporary Art due to the quality of his works and that a lot of people acknowledge him as a reference. He has inspired and has a great influence on several generations of artist in the world.

This is indeed a very interesting question. As an artist myself, I perceive an artist to be a person who shows mastery of their medium and materials alongside creativity and it is their main occupation. There are many forms of artists, visual artists, writers, sculpture artists, ceramic artists, mixed media artist, painters, contemporary artists, crafters, illustrators .. the list goes on. Indeed a baker or a confectioner could be considered an artist, however they are categorised as named. All could be classed as 'creatives' or 'makers' which would be more generic terms, under which there are many categories and sub-categories. For me, Rothko is one of my best as he knew how to touch the human psyche with his work.
An artist is a person who trough the skillful manipulation of a medium (such as sound, imagery, language, etc.) encourages the interpreter of that work to experience an aspect of the world and/or the human condition in such a way that they come to a renewed appreciation, or a different understanding of their environment and/or themselves.
In my opinion, an artist is someone who does something different from others and in the process seeks the admiration of others.

Well, good question. It reminds me of what Joseph Beuys famous saying is 'Everyone is an artist' as Klaire Bishop in the contemporary era has elaborated on its philosophy.
For me, a real artist is somebody who transcends people through art. A real artist is not selfish, a real artist is not jealous, a real artist is generous, a real artist is not looking for fame, a real artist is somebody who sees things that other people are not able to see them and a real artist highlights this fascination whether it is in industrial life or nature and he/she brings consciousness and awareness to human life and spirit.
Well, I think the subject of 'skills and manipulation of the medium, and crafts' is not necessarily made somebody a real artist and it should be addressed in another discussion. Because many famous rich artists easily hire craftsmen labor and use their skills and labor and the final work is still in the name of the artist.
Also as far as 'art' work goes, in our era, anything can be art as Arthur Danote also had emphasized on his writing which I believe it is 'After the End of Art.'
Also, it is difficult to pick one artist as best, because many great artists have had and still do have incredible influences in human life's and art history and apart from that we should determine some categories and criteria for whoever we want to choose and make it more specific.
