highly educated proffesionals might be able to speak English but don´t bet on it. In some cases their English could be a bit shaky or a tourist English. It of course depends on whether they have studied abroad. Baracelona or Madrid or other big cities could be very similar on this respect.

A translator could be a good solution.

I agree with all of the other commentators, but would like to add that a good translation of your interview guide, preferably back translated so that you can be assured of the content will be necessary. Why not contact colleagues interested in the same subjects in the various countries. They would be great soruces of local contacts, as wells as could tune you in to local cultural differences. While most Swedish people speak Enlish, their level of proficiency is often lower when engaged in conversation/dialogue in specialised subjects.
