In the monoclinic crystal structure of beta-Ga2O3, a, c are approx. 103 degrees apart. Often, a, b and c*, and a*, b and c are taken as three mutually perpendicular directions in the crystal. In an XRD analysis of Ga2O3 single crystals, I encounter a challenge in identifying a or a* and c or c*. Finding the b-plane or the b-axis is the simplest. Also, I believe, it is obvious that if I find one (a or c), I can tell what is perpendicular to it (c* or a*).
