Which wavelength light would be most appropriate to produce scattering in soil?

I want elemental analysis of soil using scattering properties, I am confused how to start with, in short I will be using a laser of certain wavelength, which is appropriate for observing in elastic scattering effects and detect it using an appropriate detector, please guide me with same.
