What should be the intensity range for proper UV spectroscopy?

Hello there!

I am working with a spectrometer project, where I would be using UV laser as light source, I want to use a cheap light detector and not photo multiplier tubes, I want to perform elemental analysis of metals and organic molecules present in a soil sample. Please suggest me with adequate intensity range so that I could get considerable feedback from my detector.
