I want to write UMAT code into abaqus. As UMAT is written in a fortran. I have to link fortran compiler to abaqus. I have gone through many forums. Everyone is advising to use intel fortran compiler with microsoft visual studio.
I have two questions here
1.Can i use another fortran compiler instead of intel fortran compiler? if not,why?
2.why we are using visual studio to the link compiler to the abaqus
finally please suggest me compatible versions of intel fortran compiler and ms visual studio to link into abaqus 6.13

regrdening Q. 1, no you can't use other fortran compiler cause works only with intell fortran compiler
Q. 2, Abaqus works with visual studio together with intell fortran.
Q3., use interl fortran composer ver 13 with visual studio 12
i tried both and worked well but you have to follow especial steps to do that. if you need instructions of how to install them and to let abaqus work wel, please let me know

intel fortran needs visual environement to work under it. that is why we need visual studio. in other words, Abaqus user subroutine usually be written in fortran using intel fortran compiler which needs to work under visual studio.
