Techniques to characterize CNT
UV and the RAMAN are best tools for the CNTs whether Semiconducting or metallic.
A team in Karlsruhe studied the possibility of separating metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes by dielectrophoresis:
http://www.int.kit.edu/downloads/RG_Krupke/Diss_Blatt.pdf
Indeed, metallic and semiconducting nanotubes possess a significantly different degree of alignment with respect to the electric field.
Methods of distinguishing CNTs accordingly to conductivity:
UV-Vis-NIR - M11, S11, S22 peaks of M/S CNTs
Raman - RBM mainly (Dont suggest by Kataura plot)
Photoluminescence - only semicunducting CNTs (+chirality)
Cathodoluminescence - only semicunducting CNTs (IIRC)
The photoluminescence spectroscopy, and when you know the chirality it is easy to find whether CNT are semiconducting or metallic (n-m)/3
