I am preparing solid polymer electrolyte using PVA as polymer. I am dissolving it in DMF at 60 C. But it is not getting dissloved from 6 hours strring....Kindly suggest me the solvent for PVA
This is the most effective way I found to dissolve PVA in water:
1) Add PVA pellets/grains to cold water under strong stirring, in order to wet the solid polymer and avoid deposits and flocculation.
2) Increase the water temperature up to 90°C-95°C, keep strong mixing.
3) Allow 30-180min to completely dissolve the PVA. At the end you will obtain a transparent, homogeneous, viscous solution.
Best thing is to use a reactor with oil bath or jacket, mechanical mixing and a condenser. Avoid direct heating on a plate.
Time and conditions vary according to the MW and the degree of hydrolysis. Lower hydrolysis grade (up to 80%) are easier to dissolve. Water is definitely the best solvent I have experienced. You can reach 30%wt concentration in hot conditions with moderate MW-grades.

I used water as solvent for PVA, I stirrered it for 3 h and 600 RPM then I increased the temperature to 90 deg (145000 Mw.). after 2-3 h I had a homogeneous solution.
