While testing Izod impact of polymers, the instrument has 5 different scales from S1 to S5 with varying degrees of resolution. Is there any standard or prior study on how to finalize this scale? Which scale can we select for testing of PBT, PC and blends of PBT+PC?
Dear Swamini Chopra, please follow the attached document, which is based on standard testing procedures (ASTM D256 or ISO 180). The scale is chosen according to an estimation of the breaking energy, either from a prior experience or some trials prior to testing. My Regards
Depends on size and strenght of sample. Better use standards for measurements.
Izod impact testing for polymers depends on the substance and its expected impact strength. There are two approaches according to the ASTM D256 standard:
- Approach A: for polymers with a higher impact strength (27 J/m or more). It uses a notch radius of 0.25 mm, and the result is calculated directly from the difference in height between the pendulum hammer before and after impact.
- Procedure B: for polymers with lower impact strength. It uses a larger notch radius (usually 1.0 mm) to concentrate stress and achieve a clean break. The impact strength is then calculated using the energy received during the fracture, taking into account the material's properties.
