Lipids in various solvents such as chloroform, ethanol, and isopropanol were spin-coated on a hydrophilized SiO2 wafer as a thin film. However, the thickness and the roughness of each film was different. Which property of the solvent affected the spin-coated films of the lipids?

My guess this is due to the entrapment of the organic solvent within the membrane. This is commonly seen in planar lipid bilayer systems. It should be dependent on the polarity of the solvent (more polar solvents should be entrapped less within the membrane).

Most important thing is to develop a skillful experience in the coating.
Of course, try to keep coating conditions (rpm and solution properties) constant in all cases.
