Which p-n junction profile (abrupt or linearly graded) is preferred for device fabrication practically and why?

Dear all researchers! While modelling p-n junction for optical phase shifter application, we have two (probably more also) types of junction profiles, one abrupt junction and other graded junction. My question is which type of p-n junction profile is preferred for device fabrication practically and why?
