The most general purpose methodology would be to apply a FEM based optimization tool. That way, you may be able to model your entire Gear system with all profile details PARAMETRICALLY via a Finite element code. Often such code is embedded as a part of an optimization system, where sensitivity analyses for the chosen parameters (in the FEM model) is performed automatically by the system.
