I am looking for adsorbent from waste sludge, which will use for gas adsorption. The adsorbent is hydrochar (which is produced by hydrothermal carbonization, HTC).
So, can you suggest me that the adsorbent in terms of powder (size?) or granular (size?) has better efficiency for adsorption of gas?
Measure the specific surface-areas and pore size distributions of your samples. Use the one with high SSA and a pore size distribution suitable for the gas.

The answer is simple. Char is considered activated char provided its internal surface area is large. There are also aspects like micro or meso pore that affect their performance for absorption. Internal surface area can be measured in many ways - nitrogen (BET), CCl4 (carbon tetra chloride), methylene blue number, etc. They have similar features but depending on the application (of what to absorb) one of these is specified as needed for that application. Typical surface areas should be in the range of 500 m2/g to 1000 m2/g. Open top gasification produces about 10 % of 500 m2/g char and on further steam activation gives about 5 % of 1200 m2/g char. Please qualify the char you have got in terms of the surface area and use it appropriately.
Matching activated carbon or biochar pore size to the size of the gas molecule you are trying to adsorb is the first approach to address efficiency. Choice of powder or granular has more to do with application/use (e.g. column mode versus batch) and not pore size or adsorption efficiency. Kinetics will, however, vary greatly between granular and powder, with powdered carbon having much better kinetics than granular. On the other hand, usually granular activated carbon can be regenerated whereas powder cannot. Matching carbon pore size to size of gas molecule you are trying to adsorb is the first approach to address efficiency.
