We know from the literature that rice plant has evolved different mechanisms to tolerate hypoxic stress. However, as rice normally grows under hypoxic conditions (during germination and seedling stages), I am asking whether aerobic condition is a stress too? OR, both of these conditions are creating stress in rice which depends on e.g., stress severity, duration, developmental stage, etc.? In a nut shell, if you have to choose one, which one of them can be called as a stress to rice, oxygen-sufficient conditions or oxygen-deficient conditions?

Drought is the most damaging amongst all environmental stresses and in India 40 per cent yield reduction in rice is reported. Rice is water loving crop and hence aerobic conditions during the life cycle of rice will be stressful.
I think non of these itself cause stress to rice provided there is no water stress and other deficit condition. For proper growth rice needs good quantity of nutrients which is more available under anaerobic submerged condition. Alternate aerobic and anaerobic condition if can be provided and whenever possible (3 days aerobic condition followed by anaerobic) give better yield of rice.
Actually rice is not a water plant. It can survive in both conditions. Alternate aerobic and anaerobic conditions except at some critical stages PI to maturity will results in good yields with less pest and disease incidence
Thank you for your elaborate answers. However, I am still not completely satisfied because through different ways it has been proven that both the conditions induce stress in rice. I wonder how the two aspects of a particular factor, oxygen availability here, can have similar effects in an organism. I mean it should ideally be only one condition causing stress, either hypoxia or hyperxia....
