you can use MSG but you'll to inject the mice few days after birth. It's a normophagic obesity associated with reduced metabolism.

Just an interesting article about it. As already mentioned, you can go easily for a genetic model  (zucker, fa/fa, db/db) where animal will be obese on normal chow in relatively short amount of time. As alternative you can give the HF diet to the mother and the offspring is highly likely to become obese also on chow (although is strain dependent in my view and takes long time). You can orally overfeed by gavage your rats or mice with a known amount of calories/composition and keep them on chow (although a gastric cannula may be easier!). A fructose enriched diet may work as well. Usually albino rats get really obese just by ageing on chow too, it really depends on your research question what will it be the best scenario/face validity model for your case!

Informative discussion, thanks for new references.  Before reading I would add using the New Zealand Obese model NZO/H1LtJ which gets obese on standard chow. We maintain this strain on chow that is 2% less fat than maintenance chow.
