I am looking at what kind of signals in the tumor microenvironment will drive the tumor cell into the dormant state. What molecules should I look at first?
There are certain combinations of mice from Jackson lab that you could use to cross and obtain mice that you could use as a model. For example a cross of MMTV rTTA mice with another mice which have an oncogene X under MMTV control can be crossed and you can obtain mice that have gene X under rTTA control and so you can induce a tumor by feeding mice with Dox in the feed this would activate gene X via rTTA and if you stop giving Dox in the feed the tumors can regress. You can also expect some tumors that regress to come back as they may mutate to become independent of geneX and thus mimic tumor dormancy and tumor recurrence. Although it is cumbersome it can be tried out. Do check for rTTA mice in Jackson lab carefully to design it.
