After searching among literature for months, I am not still able to choose a microalga strain for my PhD project. The idea is to extract as many as possible valuable compounds (such as pigments, PUFAs, polyphenols, phytosterols, vitamins) from the same microalgal biomass.
To do this, I need a strain that is being already studied and optimal conditions growth for bioproducts target are known. Also, I am not sure that selecting strains already on the market (maybe lipids or biofuels market) could be a good idea.
Which strain do you suggest?
I've found a promising strain (Stichococcus sp. KMMCC 365 but it's impossible to find to buy)

In this review you can find a table with cyanobacteria from the Lyngbya genus and the bioactive compounds they produce. The genus Lyngbya is an excellent example of cyanobacterial strains, showing extraordinary diversity in the production of more than 200 secondary metabolites with biological activity.

For doctoral research, I don't think it would be a good idea to select any strain which has already been explored. I would suggest exploring new strains from the natural pools of that specific area where you are pursuing your doctoral research.

Sanjay Kumar Gupta Thank you for your answer. However, my focus would be on cascade extraction of valuable products from microalgae. In this sense, picking an unknown strain would be more difficult, since I should dedicate a lot of time at first to find optimal cultivation conditions.
These microspecies are very special, the best to choose to study those that are readily available with a view of technical and environmental considerations. There are very very many references to algae strains but these studies might easily have different objectives than the one you form. At the end of your study you should conclude to a number of unprecedented findings and recommendations to get your degree. Different is the case if do you have an industrial support, than some aspects may change, but at the end of your study you should demonstrate what the doctoral degree requirements ask for.
