I am asking about filtering slurry comprising residue and a leach liquor (acid/base/water) having range of pulp density and particle sizes. Should we use filtration through whatman paper or centrifuge each sample or anything else to get the right analysis?
Filtration by Whatman (200um) will be more than ok. I guess you want to analyze the leach liquor by ICP or AAS, so you just need to make sure there won't be any particulate in it. If there is much solid you might perform it twice in to avoid excessive pressure drops.
Thanks Dr. Granata, I have been using whatman paper for preparing sample for ICP and AAS analysis, however, paper seems to adsorb some metals during filtartion, which remain unaccounted during mass balance. What is your opinion about centrifuging the sample?, though difficult to do for large number of sample generating in a single experiments like time variation.
I don't see any problem about centrifugation for analytical purposes. Actually it can be even faster with a proper centrifuge....so i think you can do it.
However i've never experienced metal adsorption by the filter paper. I don't know hiw big is this "unaccounted mass" but i would make sure it is not the filtration cake which adsorb some metal. In that case even centrifugation might give you some unaccounted mass but it's ok as long as you know it.
