Surface roughness is used to improve heat transfer in thermal systems. On the other hand, surface coating of nanoparticles improves heat transfer. Which method is best to improve heat transfer in thermal systems : increase surface roughness or surface coating with nanoparticles?
Coating with NP increases the surface area so it's just a specific example of increasing the roughness.

Porous coatings and foam-like structures would even more efficient (but expensive as well). We recently measured the surface area of micro-blasted surface and it can be enlarger for more than twice compared to the geometrically planar surface. A number of these surfaces (3-d plots) are illustrated in [Study on surface roughness generated by micro-blasting on Co-Cr-Mo bio-implant ]. At the same time, high surface area get oxidized faster and it affects to heat transfer (oxides are typically less conductive). That is where coatings can offer an improvement.
Depends on the materials (bulk and nano), the level of roughness and the type of thermal transport (conduction, convection or radiation) .
Catalytic growth of nanomaterials would add additional thermal resistances along the chain, minimising efficient transfer of thermal energy.
