Some varieties in rice showing high spikelet fertility under heat stress, but yield per plant is much less. Other varietes showing much less spikelet fertility but when we see yield per plant, it is more than that of high spikelet fertility varieties under heat. Which one is important to classify a variety as heat tolerant?
Hi, Vishnu, from practical point of view plant yeild is more important, of course. Traits are relatively independent, and, most probably, are regulated by different mechanisms.
Thank you for the responce. In farmers point of view, ulitmately they want yield only. But in any of heat tolerance related papers, researchers are talking about only spikelet fertility. If a variety is showing high spikelet fertility but low in yiled how can we call it as tolerant...
Hi, Vishnu, I agree with you, it is ultimately much easy to study fertility level to compare with total plants yield. The mechanism of heat effect on total plant productivity is much complicated (while less or more clear).

I think spikelet fertility is important.
There might have another abiotic and/or biotic factor(s) behind less yield in high spikelet fertile variety which causing less 'grain weight' and ultimately less yield.
I think, the better performance of the plant also depends on whether it is reproductive stage heat stress tolerance or post reproductive stage tolerance etc.
Plants with high spikelet fertility, might be not as tolerant in the ripening stage, which is why low performance under the field.
I think, these are two different things governed several stress factors. Many use spikelet fertility, mostly (%) and use use yield. Yield depends on several things such as tillers with panicles, no. of grains per panicle, grain size (wt.)., etc. These traits are not only governed by temperature, but also by other factors. If one is interested to find a variety or line is heat tolerant, then one should at least use pollen viability or germination at optimum and high temperature and develop a relative index. If we do that for all the lines of interest, then you have a relative quantitative score for heat tolerance. Then, based on variety trial experiments at a niche environment, you could also develop a relative score for yield. Combining these two scores will yield a robust technique to determine or select a live or variety for a given environment.

Most papers assume that rice yield by 2050 (many by 2100) will be stagnant. Do you agree with assumption ?, Because say, heat tolerant varieties but low yields, higher yields but heat intolerant.
Both traits are important. Finally, we need a variety with high spikelet fertility and better yield.
