This question rings similar to which is more important between self satisfaction and survival? I think that both are important... Further, it's great if both become indistinguishable.

I'd like you to view your question in a different way. You've posed the question on various conventional, knowledge resources . Some time ago I had to understand this point and reached a conclusion based on my personal needs. Individually, none of them is a sufficient knowledge source. I reached my conclusions after I o considered the various ways (sensory) that I collect information. In other words I've found that there are specific ways (using my senses) that I get the best information input. I even took some that showed that my primary resource is sound; then by my own observations mathematics accompanied by abstract black and white images and -(but not often) by color. One of my clues came while I was an artist: it was much easier to paint realism if I started with a black and white photograph.Based on what I mentioned above that made some sense. However in the case of painting realism I found that that I was connected emotionally to the colors. So, quite obviously these influence my learning experience. At present I prefer to work alone and limit my social contacts, It's faster, more productive, supports the defining and limiting goals etc., and requires that I cannot just intend to gain some knowledge, because not finishing something is forbidden.
My thoughts are directly in line with yours and they might be associated with conventional resources. But other very personal parts of the problem mush be considered because of the different ways (sensory) that people learn. In my case everything became so much easier and I became unburdened, once I developed a strategy: use my primary, best input resource until it saturates, followed by the next..one etc
I realized that there was something else that was important too. I needed a much faster rate of input not a little, but very much, and different simultaneous spoken inputs were an improvement. I taught my family to talk much faster.
Perhaps knowledge sources aren't deficient but they are limited by a parochial view that there's knowledge and then there's the student that's all there is to it. The student just learns.
