I was going through some article of antibiotic discovery, where they prepared solution of compounds in µg/ml. Two compounds show activity at 25 µg/ml and they concluded that these two compounds are euipotent. But both these compounds have a different molecular weight. Because of that they shows different µM concentration, one shows 0.04µM and other 0.08µM. From this I've concluded that the first compound is more potent than that of second.
I think it is better to look at molar concentration instate of concentration in µg/ml.
Please give your opinion and share your experience. I am bit confused in these two concentration term.
Number of unit anitibiotic is more important. And reason is the same what u have provided. So in my experiment i use µM of antibiotic only.
@Sezer, why MIC are measure in µg/ml? because i think µM concentration is best concentration unit to consider.

The first thing is that am talking about the pure synthetic anti-bacterial antibiotics.
Apart from this i already gave description regarding my query, that i found one article that says that two compound shows 25 µg/ml and they concluded that these two compounds are euipotent. In more depth that the compound with 0.04µM concentration have exactly half number of molecule compared to compound with 0.08µM concentration. Hence it is cleared that compound with 0.04µM is more potent than compound with 0.08µM concentration.
Also from this i also conclude that probability of getting adverse effect with 0.08µM concentration is high compare to 0.04µM concentration.
But i have no idea about why people go for µg/ml concentration during antibacterial studies, whether it is ideal or it is easy to perform such dilution?
And i want to know which final concentration are taken in to consideration during clinical trials of such anti-bacterial compound.
Actually i planed to perform the QSAR of that molecule and decided to convert the µg/ml to µM .
Generally concentrations are prepared in µg/ml or µM whichever found convenient is taken, for experiments I used micro or nano molar concentrations and the final potency is measure in µM/nM only compared to some reference compound.
