Pregnancy is the most cautious period to take any sorts of the medication. Generally natural herbal medicine are considered as safe but without consulting to the physician and the skilled herbalist. your question is much interesting in a sense that everybody should know about it. There are lots of debate for the safety of herbal medicine and their interactions with other medications and the physiological changes during the pregnancy. So precaution should be exercised before taking any sorts of the medicine.
The following herbs have been rated Likely Safe or Possibly Safe for use during pregnancy:

Dear friend, in my opinion use of herbal drugs without known cause need not be recommended. Still it is preliminary to prescribe herbal drugs without knowing its side effect. So it would be appreciable if rich diet foods, herbs are given to the pregnant lady. what ever Mr. Bhakta Gaire have enlisted can be considered. I would say date fruits are essentially rich diet food which can be consumed by every one. It is highly recommended for pregnant lady to consume date fruit that would be helpful during delivery and also provide strength. kindly refer this link for dates related info: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21280989
Dear Dr.Nahata, Ayurved has a separate section of literature describing the drugs that can be used right from the conception till months of breast feeding. The issue of safety raises mainly because of the low quality drugs and also if they are proprietary and not in consensus with the principles of Ayurved. Kaumarya bhrita is a granth/ treatise especially discussing these topics and in fact discussing specific diseases during pregnancy. Literature search may reflect a negative impact of these drugs, but as a practitioner and a patient too, I have seen that these drugs are used with utmost safety since years.
If you need details on some specific disease during pregnancy or for health care, I may be of some help. You can write to me on [email protected]
Every pregnant mother must b careful about any kind of use of drug and need to check the benefits and side effects .during pregnancy to treat nausea ginger is the best and more safe.
There is no any herb is for diagnostic prgnancy. So many plants are used during pregnancy but some plants are contrindicated for ex. Semicarpus anacardium etc. In Ayurveda some guoup of herbs are mentioned up to nine months, which should be taken from the day of conception i.e. from first month up to nine months for safe pregnancy as well as delivary but it should be taken under the guidence of Vaidya. Also after delivary some plants are also taken for increase the brast milk and to maintain the proper health of deliverd women
With due respect to all, even taking 1 tab of Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen/ antibiotics/and millions of OTC drugs are dangerous...why such a notion exists for our own traditional medicine which is proven safe for years and which is our pride as Indians!! Although at any point I do not suggest self medication or administration without proper medical supervision, but these drugs are really safe, only if of good quality and prescribed in order!! See the science or medicine is not faulty but the current machinery is!! I was in doubt while taking "Masanumasik kashay" for myself which are medications clearly prescribed for each month of pregnancy, not because I doubt the science of Ayurved but because of medicine quality!!
For hyperemesis gravidarum, ginger may cause more problems in patients...as per my opinion as a Physician. Although the lab results may suggest otherwise.
Agree with Priyanka, all the medicines have side effects as well. But being a Pharmacist I must say that care should be taken to avoid all kinds of medicines during pregnancy but food suppliments/ good diet. Still if there is dire need then a doctor should be consulted.
In a recent ADR monitoring we found Paracetamol was the leading cause for Hospitatlisation including SJS. During 1989 in UK 1000s of people died due to improper use of Paracetamol.
Recent analysis and comparision it is confirmed a person dying because of herbal drug is 60,000 times lesser than allopathic drug.
I am not blindly supporting herbal formulations, you are right, there are numerous ADR or Toxicity is associated, but we are less concerned about allopathy drugs just because they have FDA approval.
I have live cases of terminally ill Brain cancer patients protected & leading normal life today.
If healthy, nothing should be taken,if unwell,as with any medication care needs to be taken. If the practioner giving the advice is a competent professional, whether herbalist, homeopath or other, they would monitor individual situation. If it is just someone who heard it was godd to take??????. that person needs to see practioner/doctor of their choice
