Which groups around the world, academic or industrial, are working on developing algorithms in the field of Solid modeling, especially feature-based CAD? (Not graphics, or mesh modeling, but just CAD algorithms/functionality)
What are the research topics currently being pursued in the same domain?
There is a lot or research in the area of CAD modeling optimizations, exemplary in automotive industry. Topics are e.g.: automation of geometry creation, implementationo of knowledge-based design function, programming of problem-oriented simulation into CAD models. There are very many researchers working on the same topics. As past co-editor in chief of Journal Computer-Aided Design, I think the best is to look into the issues of the journal published in the last years. Many groups are working on specific application issues of solid modeling and feature-based CAD algorithms. Incremental developments are included in commercial systems by their developers too. I found interesting papers from many Chinese researchers in the last years. The book edited by Yanan Xie, Jikai Liu, Hongyi Liu and Y.-S. Ma, entitled ‘Features and Interoperability of Computer Aided Engineering Systems’ (Springer, 2013) provides a good overview of the recently addressed topics. Some researchers started to deal with the issues of system-level features-based modeling, which seem to be challenging without having a transdisciplinary underpinning theory.
