Hello!! Someone can help me to find a locus in saccharomyces cerevisiae which phenotype is easily detectable? But, can't be an essential gene!!! Instead, it must generate a color change or a resistance.
ade1 and ade2 mutants turn red on medium lacking adenine. But are white on adenine rich media.
qri7 deletion is unable to grow on glycerol or any other non fermentable carbone source whereas it grows perfectly on glucose. In fact such mutant has non functional mitochondria and therefore is unable to perform respiration but is able to fermentate.
I agree with Dominique, the ade1 and 2 null mutants are good to use if you want to see a color change. If you can use temperature sensitive strains, then rad51 and rad27 null mutants are temperature sensitive at 39 degrees.
