One example of a fruit variety developed using the gene silencing technique is the "Arctic Apple". This genetically modified apple variety has been engineered using gene silencing to prevent it from browning after being cut or bruised.
Gene Silencing is a molecular biology technique used to "turn off" or reduce the expression of a specific gene in an organism. It works by blocking the production of the corresponding protein, either through mechanisms that degrade the messenger RNA (mRNA) or inhibit its translation.
In the case of the Arctic Apple, gene silencing was specifically used to knock down the expression of the PPO gene, which causes browning. As a result, the apples retain their appearance and freshness for a longer time, making them more desirable in commercial markets. (Method of Gene Editing CRISPR-Cas9)
In addition to Arctic Apples, another recent addition to the set of crops obtained via genetic engineering is the pinkglo pineapple. Those ones are RNAi as well. They have pink interiors and are quite tasty! I had some in a fruit salad last year.
