I am doing thesis in effect of masonry infill walls on the failure mechanisms of low rise reinforced concrete frame building under seismic loading. It is possible to model whole building or not ? and how about opening in the infill panel. Is it possible to capture failure mechanism by using performed 3D or not? Which Finite Element software is best suitable to capture the failure mechanism of brick masonry infilled reinforced concrete building (with and without opening)?
I'm not an expert in fem modeling of masonry buildings but I think that the best three-dimensional software to be used in 3D finite element non linear analysis of this kind of problem is DIANA. You can simulate opening, mortar, masonry, failure mechanism, damage pattern, crack evolution.
If I understand correctly you are looking for a "ready to use" software. Indeed most of the FEM are based on the discretization of the wake form of the partial differential equation. To do so they usually implement the Galerkin method. I cannot point out any "ready to use" FEM software but I guess in order to better model the material failure it is advisable to find a FEM implementing the "discontinuous Galerkin Method".
