I have to analyze soil samples for plant available boron and I am going to use various extractants like hot water, CaCl2-Mannitol, DTPA-Sorbitol, and Ammonium acetate. What are the other extractants I should use? Moreover, explain the procedure for each or send any article in which it is explained in detail.
Suitability of extractants for assessing available B status in soils for B nutrition of crops is dependent on the nature of soils and also the type of crops grown. For example, mannitol-CaCl2 is proved to be efficient in alkaline soils and dilute acids may be a better extractant for assessment of available B in matured soils (i.e., acidic soil). Further, hot-CaCl2 may be a better option than simple hot water for organic matter rich or clayey soil.

Several studies were carried out comparing the extraction of boron by CAT-solution (standard in Germany), hot-water (former standard in Germany) electro-ultrafiltration (new method established by the sugar beet company) in order to archive information about the available boron in soils for sugar beets. Differences occur whether the soil contains carbonate or not. Hot water extraction provided the best results in most cases. Dear Mumtaz, in southern Brazil (subtropical climate, slight weathered soils) we are using hot water and it is very effective to extract available boron from soil. After extraction we make the quantification using curcumin and colorimetry. The only problem is that the amount extracted in our soils are low and because this we need special care to avoid analytical erros. For our soil, the critical level to plants is 0.3 mg/dm3 using this method.
