I am looking for the drugs that can activate Hypoxia Inducible Factors in kidney. Usually used drugs are prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors. I shall choose one of them to use in mice with a long period about 6 weeks, because I need to explore its role in chronic kidney disease animal models, instead of acute kidney disease. Thanks a lot.

there are a few PHD inhibitor that are tested for clinical use from Fibrogen or Bayer for example. Most are analogues to DMOG, which was used in mice before but has a low half life. You can also try desferroxamine, an iron chelator but this will give you some not HIF related effects as well.

Hi, I agree with above comments. Most commonly used are DMOG, and AKB-4924 or DFO, L-Mimosine. The latter 2 are iron chelators and may have other effects as Nathalie Dehne wrote.

The cheapest would be cobalt chloride, but you will find more sophisticated compounds in the attached papers.

The question is as to whether high (cobalt, DMOG) or low hemoglobin values (desferrioxamine inhibiting Hb synthesis) are desired in the experimental rats.
I forgot to add. In lower vertebrates (fish, amphibians) inducer HIF is hypothermia.
Thank you all very much. We are going to use a certain drugs to activate HIFs permanently, I mean, maybe our mice will be adminitered 3-4 weeks by gavage or i.p. once or twice per day. Cobalt salts may have toxicity to mice since we have to administer them for so long a time. We hope there is a drug that is able to activate (or inactivate) HIFs without much toxicity, and easy to get and easy to administer mice .
