If your plant extracts are obtained with solvents, you can use a rotavapor, to evaporate the solvent and concentrate your extract. It's very useful with organic solvents, a bit longer with water. You can also lyophilized your extract : first, your extract must be solubilized in water, then frozen, and finally put on a lyophilisator, generally overnight. You will obtain a powder of your extract. Extract are generally more stable in a powder form, especially if stored at 4°C.
thank u so much Betrand, but if i want to use a rotavapor for evaporating ethanol from ethanol plant extract, what is the exact vacuum pressure and temperature shall i use to do so.
In that case, you will preferably use a speedvac : at room temperature, until dryness. Vacuum isn't a controlled parameter, but you have to check your tubes regularly to see if they are dry or not. It's not recommended to overdry RNA or proteins, it could alter them.
Speedvac at room temperature will not alter or destroy my protien present in the sample, i do not want to carry out this process upto dryness, i only want to remove or evaporate the ethanol from my extract(concentrat the exract by removing the ethanol), and retain the water and protein. Please reply
In that case, just leave your microtubes opened under an aspiring chemical fume hood, for 10-15 minutes, and the alcohol will diffused out of your samples.
Thank u for ur reply. But please specify more, what u mean by an aspiring chemical fume hood, i would like to know which chemical u suggest me to use, and under what temp. And that chemical should not effect my compound or destroy it.
the use of manual or mechanical methods mainly depends upon the temperature of ur compound, if ur compound can with stand high temperature thats fine u can go a head.
