I am unsure of which criteria is best suited to Reinforced Concrete in ABAQUS. I am using a concrete smeared cracking approach. Has anyone tried modelling cracks in ABAQUS before?

In order to define the crack lines along the concrete cover of the corroded RC beam A1CL3-
R2 FEM, several steps were employed (ABAQUS/CAE User’s Manual):
1. Several partitions were drawn just where the cracks appeared in the concrete cover as
shown in figure 19.
2. The crack line was defined using a crack tool from the interaction module in
ABAQUS by selecting element edges of the partitioned parts that formed continuous
lines.
3. The crack extension direction was defined normal to the crack plane (across the beam
width) in order to simulate the corrosion cracks described in figure 18.
4. Finally, a seam crack was defined along the crack plane edges. This crack was defined
by ABAQUS as an edge or a face in the model, which was originally closed but could
open during the analysis.

It depends how complicated your geometry is? You may either add it as a separate part or just define as a partition.
Crack as a separate part is convenient as you don't need to mesh it using XFEM. Hope this will help....
How will the PE (plastic strain) visualization providing me the crack dimensions? I guess PE will only give the direction of vector normal to crack plane and is assumed parallel to Maximum principle plastic strain
