In some countries (including some universities in India) a "higher" form of doctoral work was awarded a D.Sc degree. It was considered in general to be "superior" degree to Ph.D. as it was presumed that the work was done by the candidate unaided by a supervisor. Are there similar programs in other countries?
In Germany, the academic title "doctor" is equivalent to a Ph.D.; however, in Germany, you state the title as "Dr. Brandmaier" instead of "Brandmaier, Ph.D.". The completion of a dissertation is a fundamental requirement for obtaining a doctoral degree and, as usual, such a dissertation is supervised by a more experienced person. In order to become a professor at a German university, you need to complete a second step, the so-called "habilitation". The requirements differ between universities but usually it is either again a thesis or a collection of (preferably first author) papers, followed by another oral defense.

In Brazil, many universities and institutes offer post-Ph.D programs. In this program, generally Ph.D.s develop your knowledge and gain experience in different institutions and areas.
In the US, it's not so clear cut. If you wish to pursue an academic career, you usually complete one or several post-doctoral assignments, preferably in the laboratory of a prominent scientist or a superior research establishment (NIH, NASA, Sloan Kettering, Mayo Clinic, etc). Then you apply for an assistant professorship. Industrial science is a whole different animal and varies between companies. But there, the bottomline is the driving consideration, not basic research for research sake. If you can find a company that still conducts basic research these days, apply for employment!
William what you say may be true but it depends on the discipline. For example in Mathematics it is unlikely that one would complete a post-doctoral assignment at laboratory. It may not be even desirable that one do so. But this has little to do with
what was asked. In the US there is essential no post-Ph.D. program, such as the "Doctor of Science" degree. I expect as we continue to over produce Ph.D.s that
there will eventually be such a program. Nowadays in order to obtain a position (in Mathematics) after receiving a Ph.D. it seems that one must have had a post-doctoral assignment and a dozen publications. It was not the case when I fished
my degree 25 years ago.

In Spain there are post-PhD degree programs and there are post-doc positions, but they are not a "higher" form of doctoral work. I suppose I'm not saying anything new here, but anyway...
Most western countries: Europe, the US, New Zealand, Australia, the UK etc possess a thriving postdoctoral program normally of one, two or three year length. At times this time can be quite long, e.g. in the case of Germany where a postdoc can lead to a Habilitationsthesis which is essentially a monograph on your research which is required for a lecturing post in that country. In the US most postdocs are one year or sometimes two years in length which makes them somewhat limited because half of that year is consumed with looking for a new job. The competition is quite strong for these posts and it is advisable to look for a postdoc in your area of expertise in order to increase your chances of getting an interview.
