I do not know if a general classification of insect hemocytes has been recently published, but it has traditionally been a complicate issue. Their form is variable and different authors, working in different models, have proposed different ways of grouping them.  If available, I would look for papers on the hemocytes of the closest relatives to the group of insects (species, order or family) you are working in, and would apply the same classification.

I agree with Dr. Claudio, You can follow any classification  which has been updated and closest to the group of insects like hemocytes(species, order or family).

Dear Prof. Claudio thanks for the suggestion.I did not find any recent classification of hemocytes. Mostly the classification of insect hemocytes is based on morphological criteria. All the classification in mostly available literature are based on the authors mentioned by me. In reviewing my paper, reviewer wrote about that these classifications  (proposed by Johns, Gupta) are largely not used anymore.Add your answer. I don't think that classified hemocytes in a wrong way. I am working on Helicoverpa armigera insect of Lepidoptera order.

you should follow the classification of lepidopteran hemocytes, which normally possess five hemocyte types. There are several papers dealing with classification of lepidotera hemocytes, and mostly prohemocytes, granular cells, plasmatocytes, oenocytoids and spherule cells are distinguished. For Noctuidae the description of 85 species´ hemocytes is described in Arnold, 1982 " Larval Hemocytes in Noctuidae", Int. J. Insect Morphology. This ahould be very useful for your species.

Thanks for the suggestion and providing the title of paper. I followed the similar pattern and recognized the five type mentioned by you. Hemocytes were also contain adepohemocytes (reported by Kalia et la., 2005) and vermicytes clearly distinguished from plasmatocytes being no cytoplasmic extension at all. Now the question is that should I place the vermicytes with plasmatocytes or not. although they were in very few in number and what about the adepohemocytes? is this not a population of hemocytes or conspecific with shperulocytes?

I can not give you a proper advice since I´m not an expert in Helicoverpa hemocytes , working mostly with Manduca. According to Arnold 1982, the vermiform (or nematoforn) hemocytes belong to plasmatocytes. Gujar and Kalia (2005) distinguish no vermiforms but adipohemocytes, which may be present in some of the sampled populations or may be not in others. Therefore I see (from the paper´s data) only five hemocyte types which can be found in all samples, and the adipohemocytes and vermiform cells might occur only in few populations, being special forms. So it depends on the topic of your paper if it is necessary to clearly distinguish between all these seven forms or to group them into main classes. I think no clear cut can be made, and, as Prof. Lazzari mentioned, it is always dificult to follow the one or another classification pattern.

Yes it is mentioned in several papers that vermicytes is a population of plasmatocytes. and agreed that it can be concluded in plasmatocytes population but presencece of adepohemocytes was clear in the sample. Although they looks like similar with spherulocytes at some extent. I learnt to identify these cells when i was working under Dr (Ms). Vinay kalia Ma'am. She is really a nice lady and have expertize with Helicoverpa armigera. I ask this question because of the comment of a reviwer on my paper about  adepohemocytes as no cell type. Well, I will modify the data accordingly and will send it again.

There is clear cut difference in spherulocyte and adipohaemocytes. Fat globules are of variable size in adipohaemocytes and glitters, whereas as in spherulocytes the spherules won't glitter. Vermiform cell (polymorphic form of plasmatocytes like: spindle shaped) should be included under plasmatocytes. See Kalia et al., 2001 Indian Journal of experimental Biology, 39 : 1123-1129

The identification of H. armigera I learned from you and glittering is the clear cut difference in adipohemocytes and sherulocytes as you mentioned. this may because every expert has their own opinion and following different classification.
