One of the best sources of tools (and documentation on how to use them) is Loet Leydesdorff's page at http://www.leydesdorff.net/software.htm. The tools here are geared towards bibliometrics scholars, but many are relatively simple to use. These tools are generally written to work with Web of Knowledge data, although some also work with Scopus data.

Another tool that is useful in particular circumstances is Harzing's Publish or Perish (http://www.harzing.com/pop.htm), which as the name suggests, was originally designed to help scholars determine their own h-index. New features have been added, however, which allow searching for words and phrases. This tool draws on Google Scholar data.

It depends on what type of analysis you want to do. If you have ready matrices for social network analysis using graph theory then I recommend UCINET, Netdraw, and Vosviewer.

Try Gephi platform that is called the "Photoshop of Graphs". There is a plugin called ScientoMiner that imports citation data from Crossref services.

You can also consider 1) do analysis and extract meaningful raw data from VOS viewer and 2) draw your result by other languages, e.g., python, R.

If you are looking for a specialized tool (not a general purpose mapping or graphing software), for sure take a look at http://bibliometrix.org/ and you will find this tool extremely powerful. Not a coder or not have programming experience or knowledge on R?! That will not be a problem at all as you can use the web based interface: Biblioshiny at http://www.bibliometrix.org/biblioshiny.html

I have not tried this yet, but it is an open access software that might be of use - http://www.bibliometrix.org

As Aghili and Cohen I think that www.bibliometrix.org is the best tool if you are working in engineering or technology espitemic fields. A litle knowlledge of R-Cran is still need. But exist a huge diferences recpect excel and others solutions.

VosViewer and CiteSpace

I suggest VosViewer because it is easy to use, free and gives a lot of outputs which should cover most of the requirements for bibliometric analysis. Further, if you need to delve deeper, then you can use powerful software like Gephi.

My experience with VosViewer was really good. I like the network of terms you can generate and the clusters by color (family of terms). Notice that this is a free software but powerful enough. I analyzed 1462 bibliographic reference from Engineering Village. Unfortunatly you can only download 500 at a time. So you need to put the references together and upload them to VosViewer. For payed option I once used WordStat 8, a module to QDA Miner. Is impressive the amount of information and the deep of the analysis. At the end it all depend on your needs and offcourse money and time.

Although VOSviewer provide some interesting visualizations regarding co-authorship, co-citations/references, and keyword analysis. However software named “biblioshiny” have some strenghts which VOSviewer don’t have. Maybe to use both can be a good strategy.

I personally liked using R-Studio - Biblioshiny for the bibliometric analysis. I think it provide some insights which are quite interesting such as three field plots. I found (but not experienced yet) that there are some techniques through which people can combine scopus and WOS bib. files into one in R-studio. Correct me if I am wrong or suggest me if some other softwares provide some interesting insights which the above-mentioned softwares can’t provide.

Based on the nature of the questions I have in my research, I usually use one of software from the list above.

- For Exporting CSV Type of information about Citation, Cited References, Authors, Languages, Countries, Affilaitions and so on, HistCite comes first.

- For calculation of Centrality and drawing their maps, UCINET can help a lot.

- Pajek usually uses to draw the maps to show the thickness and the weight of each Node. I also suggest Excel2Pajek to transfer your excel files to .Net to be able to use it in any other software.

Is there any alternative for HistCite as it only works on web of science text file. I have scopus text file. Any recommendation of software to do similar analysis as Histcite for scopus data.

I would suggest VOSviewer software. It is very practical and intuitive. It will also generate a wide range of results. I agree with the researchers Yaniel Torres , Aneeq Inam .
