Model Predictive Control are used as an optimal control, a control method for frequency control, an automatic generation control study for an isolated and distributed of power systems. For more information about this subject I suggest you to see links and attached file in topic.
- Model Predictive Control for Power System Frequency ... - Science Direct
Real time power system protection, power system dynamic security, Operation of large power systems, frequency control, power dispatch for distribution systems, etc.
Power electronic Inverters, motor drives, Active power filters and etc. Also it could be applied to solve many optimization problems specially the multi-objective optimization problems.
In transmission network in some new algorithm can be applied some predictive control. For example it can be used in some advanced protection and control system (WAMPAC) in order to stabilized operation before and during the disturbances. Also can be applied for planning business process for automation generation control (secondary and tertiary) and can be effectively applied for losses planning. Lightening system detection should have prediction for storm trajectory. In general today if you have knowledge of some process it is worth to try something with prediction.

I think Model Predictive Control (MPC) can be used in all areas and subjects of power systems. Imagine that you have a cost-function based decision system that can be applied in every field that you need to choosing an optimized solution for it. Such a system can be used in protection, switching, safety, reliability, power quality and so on. So using of MPC can not be limited to switching devices or in general power electronics. Any decision system can be adopted to using of MPC.
I think MPC can be used in a power system protection, control system to design and optimize control functions. Power electronics converters and inverters can be controlled using MPC.
