Aside of the well known methodoligcal paper by Hedley and colleagues (1982) the paper by Ivanoff and colleagues (1998) is very helpful, as it gives a phosphorus fractionation scheme especially for organic soils.

It seems that method of Hedley is the most often used, but... it also seems that it is very complex and time consuming method.

What would be your second choice after the Hedley's? Maybe there are some modification, which is simpler? Because I don't think that I will be able to carry out it, as I have never done something like that before...

P.S. Are resins used in this method something I can buy or I need to prepare them by myself?

If you want to adress all of the common phosphorus fractions there is no other possibility than to apply a time consuming fractionation scheme.

Thus, if you wanta less complex method you need to specifiy in which phosphorus fractions you are interested in and simpify the method by yourself. For instance, if you´re not interested in the most labile phosphorus fraction you can ignore the resin extraction and then you will find this fraction within the fraction of NaHCO3-extractable phosphorus. If you´re not interested in the microbial phosphorus, you would find it within the HCl or NaOH extraction.

This is an important question. The big picture is to define what you want to evaluate about phosphorus forms. We have fractionations focused on inorganic P forms (as Chang & Jackson, 1957), in organic forms (as Bowman & Cole 1978) and others focused in both (as Hedley et a. 1982). All these methods suffered modifications proposed after its publication. For example, Willians et al 1969 put residual P determination on Chang & Jackson method. Ivanoff et al. 1998 modified the original Bowman & Cole procedure to use in histosols. Condron & Goh (1989) modified Hedley, as Tiessen & Moir (2008) made de same. Likewise, Zang & Kovar (2009) made a "mix" with all these methods. In my case I use only Hedley because I need to evaluate Pi and Po in tropical soils (Po is important) and my lab procedure follows Condron & Goh schema because it is easier than original Hedley and I like to have available P by anion exchage resin as an P form from fractionation.

Condron & Newman (2011) made a brilliant review about all kinds of fractionation. I also made some considerations in Gatiboni et al (2013), but I strongly recomend Condron & Newman.

I think Hedley is the most famous and youll have more papers to compare with your data but as I told you, it is more important to know what you want so answer with the fractionation and based in this to choose the best method for your objectives.

It think that I will start with method by Chang, as it is not likely that in my material there are a lot of organic phosporus....

As I understand, method by Chang does not provide information about P that is available to plants, so. in addition, I will need to choose one of the methods design for determination of P that is available to plants. So... than I will have my next question - which is the best method to determine plant-available phosphorus... :)

What is the timeline. Is it P that is immediately available for plant uptake (Resin-P), or moderately available (0.5M NaHCO3-extractable phosphorus) or both ????
