Term "micro-precipitation" often appears in publications about biosorption. However, I can not find, what are the origins of this term, and what is the definition of this term. What is the difference between micro-precipitation (also written as "microprecipitation") and precipitation?
Here are some examples:
1) Biosorption includes electrostatic interactions, ion exchange and metal ion chelation or complexation, microprecipitation and reduction.
2) Biosorption is combination of the following metal-binding mechanisms: coordination, complexation, ion exchange, physical adsorption (e.g. electrostatic) or inorganic microprecipitation.
I would need to search more deeply into the literature but it seems that microprecipitation is not a term limited to biosorption. It may relate to small size precipitates, micro- level, such the formation of small crystals on the cell surface.
In ion-exchange for example, when the Ca exchanged by Na, and in the presence of fluoride, A fine precipitate will form containing CaF2.

This term has been used to indicate precipitation taking place locally at the surface of the biosorbent (or within the pores of the biosorbent) due to local conditions. In addition, an alternate term “surface precipitation” has been used by other researchers to describe the same phenomenon.
