Physical sorption results from the electrostatic and van der Waals interactions (forces). Sometimes only van der Waals forces are mentioned. Although motivation to do so is not clear, there could be at least two possible reasons. First of all, term “van der Waals interactions” is sometimes used loosely for the totality of nonspecific attractive or repulsive intermolecular forces.
