In my country public universities are better but poorly ranked in the world. Private universities are worse (not all), mainly because of inadequate education system in the country (legislation, finance, teaching staff, etc.).

Public universities are much better than private universities in Iraq in terms of academics and quality of teaching. Besides; education is free of charge to all students. They grant scholarships to their students to pursue their postgraduate studies abroad. Private universities do not offer these facilities to their students.
In my country, Kabul University, which is a public university is ranked first. And in second rank it is a private university, The American University of Afghanistan. However, in general public universities are way better than private universities in my country.

Public universities are the best, and this situation varies from one country to another especially when the comparison between developed and developing countries. Private universities generally thrive when public universities are weakened.

In the USA, the best private university is Harvard for all fields other than engineering. MIT and Stanford are the best for engineering. Private universities are generally better.
Most of the meritorious students are in the public universities. Students mainly in English Medium background are in the private universities. I think , though there is abundance , govt university teachers are less interested in research than politics.
