Fossil fuels are limited. In the same time energy consumption continuously increase.
Some clean energy sources require new expensive materials, that are not easy for renovation after utilization of the devices. Energy price for its production is big.
Fussion energy generation is still in laboratory state.
Nuclear power is dangerous
Solar, wind, biomass, fuel cells are still expensive. But technological development and growth in the market will allow these alternatives replace nonrenewable sources.
Probably that storage energy systems is a real key feature for renewable sources deployment.
Wind energy and Photovoltaics. In some countries, these sources already make a significant contribution (Germany, Denmark). investing new capacity. In recent years, more wind power and solar capacity has been installed than the traditional gas, coal or nuclear in Northern Europe. Energy costs of wind power (at LCOE 65 - 85 EUR/MWh) are already competitive to coal and gas in several countries, but overall renewables still need to rely on subsidies, which can be well justified knowing the external costs of fossil fuel technologies (see ExternE - www.externe.info)
For the transition from a fossil fuelled towards a renewable power supply, I made an analysis of the Nordic electricity market about 10 years ago. The development since then has been pretty much in line with my analysis. The biggest surprise since then has been the fast development of photovoltaics.
