To select antibiotics for AST, you should know following things:
1. What infection the animal/human is suffering from and what kind of sample you have? (Ear swab, Eye swab, Urine sample etc.)
2. What kind of antibiotics have been used previously for that?
3. What is the etiology of Disease? (caused by gram +ve or -ve bacteria) (Most researchers skip this to save time).
Mostly broad spectrum antibiotics are selected which are commonly available and used.
and lastly all generations of antibiotics can be selected for testing if the organism has shown to be resistant to many antimicrobials.
Resistance indicates there are chaces that the bacteria being isolated had previously been exposed to antibiotics. So you would need to interact with the community from which the small mammals are being captured to find out which antibiotics are commonly used and figure out how the snall mammals may be exposed to its residues. The commonly used antibiotics in the community should be your choice. Otherwise, you can simply consider susceptibility of the bacteria isolates to selected antibiotics rather than looking at it from the view point of resistance.
