As recalled in the article, Nordstrom's theory involves a scalar field, so its natural framework is in scalar-tensor generalizations of general relativity. There's a huge literature on the subject. A scalar field alone is excluded by the observation of the bending of light-that's what made Nordstrom stop working on it, in fact-and scalar-tensor theories are severely constrained by equivalence principle measurements, though there has been a lot of work on them in various guises.
I found a general view of the metric tensor of the gravitational field.
It turned out that this tensor coincides with the tensor associated with the Nordstrom equation, which was obtained by Einstein-Fokker.
The works related to the Nordstrom vacuum equation are interesting.
