I am looking for software that can be used to analyse the colour and pattern of the substrate where ground nesting birds lay their eggs. Does anyone have any experience with this?
I'm using ImageJ, you can try the plugging FracLAc or the option Analyze > Tools > Fractal Box Count.
If you use the Box Count you have to transform the images to 8 bit and use a threshold, before apply the box count. You will obtain different values (C2, C3, C4 …) that are related with the number of spots that boxes with different size have been able to count. You also will obtain a D-value, that is obtained after the regression between all the spots counted in the different boxes.
