I am planning a research about the effectiveness of translation on L2 writing. I assume that direct L2 writing is a little bit harder rather than translation-based L2 writing. Translation-Based L2 writing, although is assumed to be time consuming, can reduce errors and mistakes. However, I have found no previous research.

I gave seen many examples of writing by someone who is not a native speaker and was clearly translating directly from another language, such as Chinese.
This often results on poor writing because rhetorical structures may not be the same, and idiomatic writing can be hard to translate.
Advanced foreign language users are often encouraged to "think in the L2." I think this would discourage the use of direct translation.
I'm afraid to say that direct writing of the second language is better than translated writing for L2, contrary to your opinion. Please see the article on the link below:
